4 Steps to Empowering Yourself

What you love you empower-what you fear you empower-and what you empower you attract.–Author Unknown

Empowering Yourself

Empower means: the power to make choices relevant to one’s situation, acting with confidence. It’s about realizing that you have the power to take control of your own destiny and make the choice to live the life you desire.

Empowering yourself is possibly the most important thing you can in terms of realizing your true desires. Your thoughts and feelings go hand in hand. If you spend much of your time self-identifying with negativity, and self-loathing then this becomes your self-image. Your self-image determines how others see and treat you.

The more you empower yourself, the more you act with confidence. The more you’re able to see the real potential of who you are, and change your self-image. As the circle continues, this more confident self-image now determines how others see and treat you.

Empowering yourself is also to some a scary proposition. If you truly want to be empowered you must first take responsibility for your life, period. You must accept without a doubt that you created or co-created every situation in your life. That doesn’t mean placing blame or feeling shame.

It simply means that you have to accept that the choices you’ve made up to this point have led to where you are in life right now. Most mental health professionals will say that this leads to a blame the victim mentality. However, if you are empowered and making decisions based purely on your core values, then you will not be a victim.

If something unpleasant or even horrible happens in your life, you’ll have the tools to deal with it. You will not see yourself as a victim of circumstance. You’ll see yourself as someone who currently has a situation that needs to be dealt with and you’ll find the best resources available to deal with it. No matter the situation.

Taking the Steps

1. Acknowledge and accept where you are right now. Once you do this, you can then say to yourself, “this is where I AM and that’s okay for now.” Knowing and accepting where you are will give you a clear understanding of what you need to do to move forward.

2. Figure out what you do want. You have to be specific. Just simply knowing what you don’t want isn’t good enough. Pose the question, the answer is there you just have to know how to listen for it. Meditation can help you. It will allow you to quiet your mind so you can hear the answer.

3. Deal with any resistance you feel to the answers you’ve been given. This may require you to change your beliefs. Remember if you believe you can’t then you can’t. You have to start to believe it’s possible. Learning to monitor your feelings will help you. When you think of your newly set direction in life, pay close attention to the feelings you get.

If you feel doubt, fear, anxiety, or any other negative emotion, then stop for a moment and determine what you were just thinking that caused those feelings. Take each thought one at a time. For instance, you find that fear or anxiety kicks in when you’re thinking of your new direction. And you determine you were thinking, I’m not smart enough to do this.”

Then ask yourself, “Why do I feel this way?” And start thinking and listing all the things that you’ve done in your life that say otherwise. Always turn the negative into a positive. If the fear or anxiety is deeply rooted, and you can’t use these techniques to move past it, you may need to seek the aid of a counselor to discover why you can’t let it go. But generally, just turning the negative thought on itself is enough to move past it.

4. The last step is to have faith and allow. Once you’ve dealt with the negativity concerning the change, have faith that you’re taking a positive step in the right direction. Allow it to happen. Relax and pay attention to how events unfold.

You’re on the path to becoming who you really are. Your past holds only memories of what was and your future holds the promise of what you create. This is empowerment. You now have the power to take control and make the choices that allow you to live the life you desire and deserve.

Begin with May

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.–Michelangelo

May

Begin with May

May has arrived. We’re already 5 months into 2013. Can you believe it? Now is the time to take a hard look at the goals you set for this year. Have you taken any creative action to achieve any of those goals? If not, now’s the time to begin.

All action isn’t equal. Creative action is different from just throwing something out there to see what sticks. When you try this approach it just leads to more frustration and quitting before you get any real results. Creative action is action that comes from a place of clarity and knowing exactly what it is that you’re trying to achieve.

When you can begin with the end in mind you become more clear. You get a picture of the path ahead and just what steps you need to take to follow that path, And it’s through this clarity that you’re ready to move forward and take creative action. Believe that Source will provide exactly what you ask for as long as you do your part, which is to open your mind-allow, get quiet, listen, follow the clues, take action, and trust in Source and the process.

Another month is going to pass by whether you do anything at all or not. If the goals you set are important to moving forward, achievement can only come if you decide right now that you’re going to leave your self-limiting beliefs behind and pursue your dreams. Make that decision and stick to it.

Baby-Steps

Then take that first baby-step. Remember you don’t have to do it all at once. You simply have to begin. So, begin today. Set a plan of action to do just one thing each day that’ll put you on the path to where you want to go. Once you begin to do that one thing, you’ll see that one thing leads to another and soon you’ll be putting big red check-marks next to your goals.

Throughout this process it’s important to have faith in your dreams and your desires. Know beyond a doubt You are worthy of having, doing, or being anything you choose. Follow your own iGPS (innate Guidance Prescience Source). You may think of this as your conscious or intuition but it’s so much more.

Prescience means forethought or knowledge of things to come. When you’re able to tap into your iGPS you’ll go deep within and access your own core values. Once you do you’ll see the end result clearly. Then with faith, Source will show you the way to create the life you desire. So, why not begin with May? Start taking that creative action and by June you’ll be well on your way to living the life you desire and deserve.

Get In Touch-Naturally

“Because we have learned to believe negativity is more realistic, it appears more real than any positive voice.”

Get In Touch-Naturally

thinkfeel1Most people cringe when they hear…”get in touch with your feelings.” They’ve been told some where along the line that being in touch with their feelings means that they’re weak. But it’s just the opposite. Getting in touch with your feelings is one of the most empowering things you can do.

If you feel tired, rung out, useless, angry, stressed, jealous, loathing, hatred, unworthy, disgusted, or depressed most of the time then the majority of your thoughts are of those very things. Your thoughts and feelings are interchangeable.

The thoughts come first. Something happens and your begin to think about the situation. The more you focus on it, the worse you begin to feel. But, you don’t connect feeling bad with what you’re thinking. The worse you feel the more you focus on the situation. That’s why it’s so important to become conscious of your feelings.

You can’t monitor every thought you have. But, you can monitor how you feel. Understanding how you physically feel is the key to what you’re thinking. Do you feel tense? Do you have headaches and body aches? Do you have high blood pressure? Do you feel that it’s hard to move and takes great effort just to get up in the mornings?

These are all physical signs or feelings that your thinking is negative. Mind and body (as well as spirit) go hand-in hand. When you’re constantly bombarding yourself with negativity, your body can only react one way and that’s negative.

Also, begin to pay close attention to the way you react to people and situations. If you find yourself feeling frustrated, impatient, or agitated just keep reminding yourself that, “you cannot control the actions of others–you can only control the way you react to them.”

Negative energy floats through the air like a virus, just waiting to latch on to someone whose defenses are down. And you’re most vulnerable when you’re out of alignment with your Higher Source. When you learn to quiet your mind and the relentless negative self-talk and listen to what Source is telling you, you begin to see that negativity isn’t the natural way of being.

Feeling of constant overwhelming stress and anger aren’t natural. Headaches, body aches, high blood pressure, and feeling that it’s hard to move and takes great effort just to get up in the mornings, isn’t natural.

Feelings of love, compassion, joy, peace, and harmony are the natural way of being. And, when this is your way of feeling the majority of the time those physical signs tend to disappear. You feel good, have plenty of energy, and are happy and love life. You know intuitively that this is the natural way of things.

Find it within yourself to access these feelings. You possess them naturally. They’re simply buried under the viral negativity. Dig deep, get in touch with those feelings and you’ll soon find that you’re empowered to live a natural way of life.

The Perfect Life-Mind, Body, & Spirit

Today we choose consciously what we want to create. We can say, “It’s up to me to create my day. I get to choose what’s important to me. I get to choose what I focus on.”

hands-with-starsNo matter where you are in life right now, it’s possible to live your perfect life. You’re probably thinking not even close. But it’s true.

You may not be doing everything you want to do. Or, you may not have everything you want to have. But the way to a perfect life is to make everything you do have right now as perfect as possible. Raise the bar a little at a time and don’t settle for anything less.

Follow this mind, body and spirit exercise to take that first baby-step to living your perfect life.

Mind: Your mind sees in pictures so begin to visualize your life the way you want it to be. Make your visualizations as vivid as you can. See in detail, feel the feelings, hear in your thoughts what others are saying, and don’t let anything stand in the way of “seeing” your life, as you desire it. See yourself as already having everything you need to live your perfect life.

Body: Now, you know what your perfect life looks like. Start taking the creative action necessary to make it possible to raise the bar. Creative action comes from a place of clarity and knowing. Be open to opportunity and be ready to jump on those opportunities. If opportunity comes knocking you’ve got to get up off the couch and answer the door.

Spirit: You have to take a leap of faith, let go of any self-limiting beliefs and bring forth the belief in yourself, that it’s possible to turn things around and have the life you desire. Allow good things to come to you. You are deserving of having only the best life can offer. Always remember that!

Baseball, Philosophy, and Life

“You can only compare yourself to yourself. When you start getting involved and comparing yourself to someone else, that’s always dangerous.”–Joe Maddon

Baseball, Philosophy, and Life

The philosophy of Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon…and how it can help you move forward and win at the game of life.

Some of you who follow me on Twitter and Facebook may know that one of my passions is baseball, specifically the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays are a true “Cinderella” team. In their first ten seasons, they never finished higher than 4th place out of 5 teams.

It wasn’t just that the team had a losing record. You could just tell that the players themselves believed they were losers. You could see it every time they took the field. You could see it in their demeanor. They would barely hustle out to their positions. There was no energy no fire whatsoever.

I do promise if you keep reading you’ll soon understand what all of this baseball talk has to do with moving forward and living the life you desire.

Then in 2006, came new ownership, a new manager, and a new philosophy of winning. Joe Maddon, a rather unconventional manager especially by baseball standards, embraced that philosophy. He not only embraced it. He took it to a whole new level and brought it into the clubhouse in a way the team and the fans had never before experienced.

By the very next season, you could see that something was starting to shift. Even though the team was still losing, it was as though the team no longer believed they were losers. They’d begun to shed that loser attitude. Their demeanor changed completely. The players would take the field each night, hold their heads up high, hustle out to their positions, and look like they were ready to play. And, it didn’t matter if they won or lost when they left the field they would still hold their heads up high.

Then in 2008, to ignite the team Mr. Maddon came up with some rather interesting baseball math “9=8″.  To those of you who may not know baseball, there are 9 players that make up each team. There are 9 innings per game. And, there are 8 teams that make it to the playoffs.

What he was saying is if “9 players come together and play hard for 9 innings they can be one of the 8 teams to make it to the playoffs.”

Just think about this for a moment. In life, we all need to have a “team” we can count on to help us accomplish our goals. We can’t do it alone. We need to have those people around that we can count on. An entire team of family, friends, coaches and teachers, that are willing to give us their all so that we can accomplish what we set out to do. And in turn, we need to give our all to help others accomplish their goals. That what being part of “team brother/sisterhood” is all about.

Then he shared another great philosophy…W.I.N. What’s Important Now? This meant the same thing to the team as it does to life in general. It’s important to stay conscious, be in the moment.Don’t dwell on past failures and don’t anticipate the future. In order to win a game or to win in the game of life you have to decide what the most important thing is you can do right now in this very moment to help you achieve your goals. And then take the necessary action to get it done. Knowing “What’s Important Now” will give you the tools you need to win at this wonderful and mysterious game of life.

And, again in 2011, Mr. Maddon perhaps came up with the most important philosophy of all…Another Way. In the off-season, the Rays lost many of its key players. Guys who’d been leaders among their peers, guys who’d stepped up and helped the team win. This fortunately or unfortunately depending on your perspective is just how professional sports work. No matter the sport.

But even though some of the key pieces were now missing, other pieces had been brought in to fill the space. New players with different abilities and different attitudes came together as a team. Some of these guys took the opportunity and stepped up into the key roles that were left vacant. Some found the courage to lead their team. But together, all of them found another way to win. And, win they did. They entered the playoffs as one of the Wildcard teams in what was very dramatic fashion on perhaps the most exciting day in all of baseball history.

And this past season he has coined yet another pearl of wisdom….MoRmentum that literally means more momentum. When you begin to believe in yourself and start to take those baby-steps forward it’s important that you see the little (or big) successes and build on it from there. This will help you to stop putting up roadblocks and keep you moving forward. Then you can simply let the MoRmentum carry you in the right direction.

When it comes to moving forward, you may feel that you have some key pieces missing. So, sometimes you just have to find another way to achieve those goals. Look for another solution, another option, another opportunity to stretch yourself, step up, take the lead, and find the courage to let go of the fear and all those things that are holding you back. Then build on the successes and allow MoRmentum to carry you forward. If you can do this, then not only are you in the game but you’re certainly well on your way to winning and discovering the life, you desire.

And this season we’ll just have to wait to see just what “philosophy” Mr. Maddon brings the game. But, to be sure whatever he chooses, it’ll be one that not only his players but all of us can apply to our “life’s lessons” of moving ahead and winning at the game of life.

Just a note, in the last 5 seasons the Rays have had a winning record. And 3 out of those 5 seasons they’ve made it to the playoffs and in 2008 all the way to World Series.

Here’s to wishing you (and my Rays) many more winning seasons.

Mental Time Machine

Do not dwell in the past. Do not dream of the future. Concentrate the mind on the present moment. –Buddha

Mental Time Machine

imagesI tell my clients that it’s very important to live in the moment. You have nothing more than this very moment in time. Until someone invents a T.A.R.D.I.S. (time machine from Dr. Who), this is it. You can’t go back and you can’t go forward. You can only change things in this moment.

So the next thing I hear is this panicked voice saying,” What about the future, how am I supposed to plan for my future? I can’t just let it happen. I have to have control. I have to plan.”

And that’s true you do have to plan and set goals or you’d just drift along without any sort of purpose. But think about it. Planning and setting goals doesn’t happen in some other time it happens in the moment that you’re actually taking action to do it.

There’s a difference between mental time and physical time. Mental time is the time you spend dwelling on the past and pining for the future. Physical time is the time you spend setting goals, taking creative action, and doing the things you need to do this very moment to realize your dreams.

Begin by taking baby-steps now to get where you want to be. If you feel you need to resolve a past issue before you can move forward then do it now. Set whatever plan in place you need to in order to resolve your issue. I used to be an all or nothing kind of person. Either I did it all the first time around or I let it go and never bothered to finish it.

Then I found out that if I took small stumbly little steps forward, eventually I’d get to where I wanted to be. And, that was one of those “aha” moments. It was a relief to discover that by taking creative action in the moment things would pretty much just fall into place.

It’s only when you remain stuck in “mental time” that life seems hard. Now that doesn’t mean you won’t experience hard or bad situations again. You may. And that also doesn’t mean that dealing with those things you’ve held on to won’t be difficult. It might. But if you act in the moment to deal with those things then you can move forward knowing that you have control of the situation. The situation doesn’t have control of you.

No matter where you are right now, you have to take action to move forward. So it’s your choice just what kind of action you take. You can take re-action, which means you react to everything as it happens without having a plan in place. Or you can take pro-action, which means that you are being proactive, dealing with any issues that arise the moment they do. And, putting plans in place to keep those issues from happening again.

You and only you get to make the choice whether you’re reactive or proactive.. You can do something, one small thing each day that will move you forward toward your dreams. Or you can just sit, wait, and grow old regretting what could have been. Don’t dream about tomorrow. Don’t dwell in the past. Make this moment the moment you take creative action to make your dreams come true.

How the Law of Attraction Really Works

“To accomplish great things dream, plan, act, and most importantly believe.”-SL Taylor

How the Law of Attraction Really Works

You know when you have something that’s real because it’ll stand the test of time. Helena Blavatsky coined the phrase Law of Attraction in her first book, Isis Unveiled: Secrets in 1877. That was 135 years ago. But the theory dates back at least millennia or more to early Hinduism and the Law of Karma.

The Law of Karma is a universal or spiritual law which states, man has free will and can change the course of his life, if he so chooses through his actions. In other words, your actions determine the course of your life. I don’t think anyone could disagree with this theory.

If we can agree that your actions determine the course of your life, then how does the Law of Attraction really work? The Law of Attraction is a universal or spiritual law as well and it states that which is like unto itself is drawn. Or, more simply, like attracts like. What does this have to do with determining the course of your life?

Perhaps everything. If your actions determine the course of your life then surely your thoughts and feelings determine what actions you’ll take. This is where I have a very different understanding of the Law of Attraction. According to the Secret, the book that brought LOA to the mainstream, all you have to do is apply a little positive thinking and all your dreams will instantly manifest before your eyes.

If only that were true, we’d all be in Utopia. But since the world is as it is, we all know that LOA doesn’t quite function like the Secret would have us believe. But just because it doesn’t work one way, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work at all. LOA is very real and works perfectly every time.

LOA works through a mind-soul connection. This connection is made through daily meditation. Your soul is your link to God or the Source of all that is. God exists everywhere continuously and simultaneously throughout the whole of creation. And God manifests in essence in all of us.

It’s through this connection that you’re able to access the Universal Collective Intelligence (UC-I). This is where through your thoughts your actions are determined. What you think literally attracts you to people and circumstances that determine how your life unfolds.

If you think negative thoughts then you’ll find that you’re part of the Negative Collective herd and you’ll make decisions and take actions that lead to negative behaviors. You’ll continue to attract more and more negative situations that keep you moving in the wrong direction. Until you change your thoughts and the behaviors that accompany those thoughts, you’ll continue to go against the grain. That’s why when you choose this path life is so hard.

Conversely, if you choose to be happy and think positive thoughts then you’ll find yourself making decisions and taking actions based on that way of thinking. You’ll continue to attract more and more positive situations that keep you moving in the right direction. Good things will be happening and you’ll find that your journey can be easy when you take the right path.

Either way you’re attracting the answers you need based on your way of thinking.  Depending on whether that thinking falls under the category of negative or positive you’ll attract the people and circumstances that will either help you easily resolve your issue or keep pushing further away from the answers you seek. This is the real Law of Attraction at work.

Wisdom from Dad

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.”–Marcus Tullius Cicero 106 BC – 43 BC, Politician, Orator and Philosopher

I ran this article last Christmas, but had several requests to run it again this year-so here it is hope you enjoy it.

Wisdom from Dad

When I was a child just starting to develop my own since of the world and make my own friends, my dad said to me and as I type this, I can hear his voice, “be careful of the choices you make now, they will forever shape your life.”

And he continued, “When you get older, regardless of whether you see your life as good or bad you should be grateful for every bit of it. After all, it’s the choices you make that determine how your life unfolds. Your life is a miracle of your making. So be sure to make it what you want.”

Now I understand the universal laws. And looking back, I think ol’ pop was practicing the Law of Attraction long before most anyone else had a clue. He was one of the most inspiring men I’ve had the pleasure of knowing.

He didn’t have it easy growing up…in his youth, (long before I came along) he made a few bad choices and thankfully learned some very valuable lessons. And I think it was because of this, that he always grateful for all he had. And he taught me all about gratitude.

I remember the year I asked if there really was a Santa Claus. Well, I thought my father would keel over. Not because it dawned on him I was growing up, but because how could I ask such a ludicrous question. Of course, there is a Santa Clause.

And I went on to say, that my friend Lynn said, her mom told her that Santa really didn’t exist. That Mom’s, Dad’s and other people just buy you gifts. Santa is just made up for little kids.

He sat back for a moment and then said, “Well to be honest there is no little jolly elf that lives at the North Pole and runs around in a red suit, driving a sleigh, and coming down chimneys.

But, Santa as we know him never was a real person. You see, it’s the ideal of Santa that’s real. The ideal that someone cares enough about you and loves you enough to want to give from their heart to you.”

Be Grateful for Giving

He continued, “It’s the act of giving love, and being selfless that makes us all Santa. So as long as you remain especially grateful for all you give and all you receive, the ideal of Santa will live inside you forever.”

Although this conversation happened some 38 years ago, and dad has been gone almost 30 years, I still remember his words as though he said them yesterday.  Being grateful for the ability to give is more important than being grateful for what you get.

Our mission here is to live our loves happily and harmoniously so that we can be in a place of giving to others. If we’re not in a place of peace within ourselves then we have nothing to offer others. We only have the ability to be Santa when we can give selflessly. But first, we must be a bit selfish. We must make sure that our lives are in perfect harmony before we can give of ourselves.

Now is the right time to tap into all the “goodwill” energy others are projecting. Then relish in it, store it away for use all year long. If everyone would just live the ideal of Santa all year instead of just at Christmas, there really would be peace on earth and goodwill towards all.

Gratitude is a Lifestyle

“Whenever you’re facing any form of resistance, gratitude has the power to quickly dissolve it. This is true whether the hindrance comes from inside of you or outside of you.”-Peggy McColl

Gratitude is a Lifestyle

Gratitude isn’t about throwing down some turkey with family and friends once a year. Gratitude is a lifestyle. It’s about learning to see that all the things that happen in your life do so to teach you something. And it’s up to us to learn to be grateful for these lessons.

When you learn to be grateful for things that most people see as problems or annoyances your life runs along much more smoothly and with much less stress. Feeling gratitude is the most important thing you can do to manifest your desires.  When you are grateful, you’re not resisting the good that is coming to you. In fact, you’re actually attracting more of that good into your life.

Gratitude starts the whole manifesting ball rolling. By feeling grateful for the things that you already have or even the things that you desire, you’re thinking positive. You’re happy and in harmony with your Source.

This means that you’re open to allowing because you’re no longer resisting the good that is out there for you. Just by being grateful, you’ve already conquered the Law of Intentional Consciousness and the Law of Allowing.

You’re intentionally feeling the feelings of being grateful and you’re allowing the good that comes from those feelings into your life. The only thing left is the Law of Attraction. You’re ready to begin attracting the things you desire.

Notice I didn’t say by Being grateful. You have to really Feel the feelings of gratitude. Live the life of someone who is genuinely grateful for all the things they have. Remember it’s your feelings that make it all happen. Your feelings are your link to your Source. So you must get in a place of feeling before anything can or will happen.

Let it Happen

You’re learning to live a lifestyle that says I’m grateful for everything. Now, you must learn to relax and let life come to you. Keep feeling grateful. See yourself as someone who is able to see past the obvious. Write in you Gratitude Journal daily about your feelings and the lessons you’ve learned.

If you get impatient, skip a step, or begin to stress when things happen you’re setting up resistance. Think about it like this, worry, impatience, and frustration are all negative emotions. Negativity closes you off from anything good. So now, you’re resisting. By doing the above things instead, you’re taking positive creative action.

You’re in essence saying I’m relaxed, I’m sure, I believe and I’m ready to have good things come to me. I know without a doubt that it will happen. You’re taking the steps to make it happen and this will put you into a vibrational pattern that will attract positive people and situations that you can be grateful for.

So when it comes to living the life you truly desire then be grateful for all that you already have. Gratitude is the soul of the universe.
