What you resist, persists….I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become. Carl Jung
How to Get Past Your Past
There’s no denying that your past is well your past. It’s something that happened to you, something you experienced and perceive as either good or bad. And it’s something most people have made a big part of who they are.
But your past is just that…past. It doesn’t need to be part of you in this moment or in the future. Dwelling on it certainly isn’t going to change it. Once something has past there is no way to change it. It’s already happened, it’s over and done.
Most people have become very proficient at the “if only game.” If only my childhood had been different, if only I hadn’t let my first love get away, if only I’d been born rich. If only I could go back and change this one thing.
And what if you could? Which one thing do you think you would change that would completely alter where you are now? Most believe if you change the past you completely alter the future.
I don’t necessarily think so. I believe there are many roads in life that you can travel but there are still constants along each of those roads and no matter what decisions you make you’ll still have those things as part of your life.
You attract these things based on your iGPS and core values. So no matter how lost you get your core values remain the same and you attract, perhaps by default, some things based on those values and your default connection to Source.
The Wrong Road
The problem with being on the wrong road is that you won’t know that those things belong. Let’s say you moved away from a particular area years ago. Now you decide to take a trip back to the old stopping grounds.
As you get closer, things begin to look familiar. You take a turn on a street that used to go all the way through to your old school. You’re so sure of where you are now. But over the last several years, the whole area has changed. There are new additions of homes and businesses. And now the road ends and you can no longer just go straight ahead. The only choice you have is to turn right or left.
Right takes you directly to the school parking lot. And, there’s something about turning right that seems, well right. But since you’re not making a direct connection to Source you ignore the feeling and make the choice to go left.
It takes you way off track, and now you have no idea where the school is at all. But you still see some old houses and a few businesses you think you recognize. They’re there just like before. It’s just that everything else around them has changed. So you’re not quite sure if that’s the old pharmacy Mr. Cutler owned or not.
But you’re lost and need directions anyway so you decide to stop at the pharmacy and ask. Yes, it’s the same place and Mr. Cutler is still running it. Now things feel very familiar. The truth is you never get so off course that you abandon your core values or completely lose your connection to Source. So some things will always be there.
Law of Intentional Consciousness
And, even if you keep passing them by, they will continue to show up in one form or another. Although they are there, they may always remain lurking in the background if you never make the decision to take the right road.
So, you can continue to blame your past, and say what if all you want. But living in the past isn’t going to change a thing that’s happening in your life in the present. To change the present you have to start living in the present.
Your thoughts and feelings about the past are the same as your thoughts and feelings about anything else. Regardless of whether they’re negative or positive they’re simply beliefs that have developed over years of thinking those thoughts.
So to change the way you think, simply replace the thought you’re currently having with a better thought. You can do this by consistently practicing the Law of Intentional Consciousness.
This law states that you must become intentionally conscious of your feelings and the thoughts that accompany those feelings. When you feel bad, your thinking is negative and when you feel good, your thinking is positive.
Being conscious of your feelings and then intentionally reaching for a better feeling is the way you change your thinking and ultimately your beliefs. You’re looking for the best feeling you can find…the feeling of utter joy.
Once you reach this state and consistently maintain it you’ll be in the present and the past will no longer matter. And “if only,” won’t be part of your beliefs. Your beliefs will be centered on the present and all the wonderful things you are manifesting in your joyous life.
