First Step to Keeping Your 2010 Resolution
You’ve toasted in the New Year and resolved that in 2010 you’ll begin living the life you desire. Now you’re ready to take the first step to keeping that resolution. It’s time to decide exactly what it is you desire.
This is where the “work” begins. It’s easy for most of us to know what we don’t want. Ask 10 people what do they want and I’ll bet 8 of them will tell you what they don’t want instead. But oddly enough knowing what you don’t want is the first step to discovering what you do want.
Start by taking 2 pieces of paper at the top of one write, “What I don’t want.” At the top of the other write, “What I do want.” On the one labeled “What I don’t want” begin listing the things in your life that you no longer want.
Your paper should look something like this:
I don’t want
To remain in debt
To be unhappy
To be sick
To be afraid
To be jobless
To be homeless
To feel worthless
Then take your next piece of paper and turn those don’t wants into things that you do want.
I do want
To have more than enough money in the bank so that I can easily share with others and have plenty left over
To be happy and fulfilled
To be healthy, feel good and have plenty of energy
To embrace life and be open to accepting the good that it has to offer
To discover my passion and know that my unique talents are in demand and that I will have more than enough opportunities to use them to fulfill myself and others
To have a my own beautiful, welcoming and comfortable home
To feel that I am a valuable asset and know that the universe benefits from all my experiences
Now that you have your list of “do wants” it’s time to take the Is This Really What I Want Test. Just because you may believe it’s something you desire doesn’t necessarily mean that it meets your core values.
This is extremely important for you to have the things you really want. You must know if your desires are truly your desires or if they’re the desires of society. What I mean by that is…is this something you really want? Or something you think you want because society says that it’s supposed to be this way? It’s very important that you understand the difference.
By society standards you’re supposed to want to be rich, own your home, have a “respectable job” (climbing the corporate ladder,) be married, have children, etc. But this may not be what you really desire. So to live the life you desire you have to know the difference. Do you really want it? Or do you want it because you’re supposed to want it?
Telling The Difference
The way you know the difference is it has to feel right. Your feelings will tell you everything you need to know if you just learn to pay attention and recognize what they’re telling you.
Our feelings or emotions are the link between our earthbound consciousness and our higher consciousness or connection to Source. It’s like the old saying, “if it doesn’t feel good then don’t do it.” Your feelings are helping you decide what’s right for you. And, what’s right you for may not be right for anyone else.
Over this next week, go through your list. As you read each entry pay attention to the feelings you get. The feeling you’re looking for is what I call the Butterfly Affect. It’s that flutter in your stomach as if you have a swarm of butterflies fluttering around. You feel the energy start to build up almost like you’re buzzing.
At the same time, you’ll feel a calm come over you. This is how you know you’ve connected to your Source. And that what you desire is really a match to your core values. It’s a choice that you’ve consciously made. And it’s the right one for you.
Take Your Time
Take plenty of time to do this exercise. There’s no real sense of urgency. Every step you take in this direction brings you closer to where you’re supposed to be. So, it’s extremely important that you really know what it is you desire. If you don’t, you’ll just end up back at square one, unhappy with your life.
Your path may be totally different from everyone else’s. Or it may be different from what you thought you wanted. When put to the test mine turned out to be completely different from what I thought. But it’s also turned out to be perfect for me.
We set ourselves on certain paths by the decisions we make, by trying to keep up with the Jones, or living up to someone else’s expectations instead of our own. But this path really isn’t your true path through life. It may be adjacent to your path or it may be miles off. Just where it lies depends on how much resistance you’ve built up over the years. As long as you start heading in the right direction, you’ll get there.
For the rest of this week read the things you’ve listed on your “I do want” list. As you do, pay attention to your feelings, cross off the list the things that don’t give you the Butterfly Affect. Remember take your time and be sure that the things left on your list are truly the things you desire.
